Safeguards and Precautions for Installing and Removing an Inflatable Bladder Dam

An inflatable bladder dam is the easiest and most effective way to dewater a worksite. Installation is typically 3 to 5 times faster than conventional cofferdams with minimal equipment and manpower. It’s the go to dewatering and flood protection solution. To ensure maximum safety and effectiveness, adhere to the following safeguards and precautions.

Installing and Removing an Inflatable Bladder Dam

Dewatering a worksite is a formidable endeavor, requiring the utmost attention to procedure and safety. During your next Aqua-Barrier® installation and removal, follow these guidelines.

1) Consult with a representative.

Each installation is unique and may require different or custom precautions. For this reason, it is required to consult with an HSI Services, Inc. representative prior to installation.

2) Follow OSHA guidelines.

Understand and follow all trench and excavation guidelines given by OSHA.

3) Everyone needs a cutting tool.

Anyone who is involved in the installation and removal of water filled bladders should have a cutting tool such as a knife or a razor on hand.

4) Deployment and recovery plan.

Your HSI Services, Inc. representative will assist you in creating and using a deployment and removal plan.

5)Respect the barriers.

Keep a space of 10ft to 12ft between an inflated barrier and all workers. When excavation is being conducted near an Aqua-Barrier®, even more distance may be necessary. Do not walk on an inflated or deflated barrier. Maintain a 10-ft operating distance between inflated barriers and all heavy equipment. During installation, never position yourself beneath an elevated portion of an inflatable bladder dam or piece of equipment. Adhere to all Overhead Power Line Safety laws and OSHA requirements.

6) Allow for an additional easement.

When work requires excavating in a dry environment provided by an Aqua-Barrier® and the excavation depth is greater than 1 ft, allow for a 1 ft easement area per extra foot of excavation in addition to the required 10-12 ft space from the barrier and excavation area.

7) A minimum crew of 3 workers.

A minimum crew of 3 workers is mandatory when installing, working around inflated barriers, or removing Aqua-Barriers®.

8) Do not drag or pull the Aqua-Barrier®.

Inflated or deflated Aqua-Barriers® should never be dragged or pulled across any surface. This could cause permanent surface damage to the barrier.

Surface Treatment Only

Aqua-Barriers® are only a surface treatment. Water can transmit beneath the barriers depending on the soil porosity. All dewatering projects require sump pump area(s). The porosity of the soil will determine the amount and size of sump pumps needed. In order to determine the effectiveness of the Aqua-Barrier® for a particular work environment, a complete review of the Worksite Assessment Sheet by an authorized Hydrological Solutions representative is necessary.
