Water Conservation During the Holidays

With the holiday season in full swing, ‘tis the season for long family visits with a high traffic volume going in and out of your home. As all the cousins stand in line waiting for their turn in the bathroom, you can’t help but wonder what the next water bill will be like. Water usage does not just impact your bill but also has a significant impact on the environment – making water conservation during the holidays a must.

Water Conservation Tips for the Holidays and Beyond

How do you conserve water during a time of year when usage is more likely to go up? You are likely cooking large meals, cleaning the house to get ready for family and friends, doing lots of laundry, and hosting guests who all need to use water. You may not be able to keep water usage at the same level as or lower than normal, but you can minimize the amount of extra water used.

Here are a few tips to help you with water conservation during the holidays:

Plug the Drain

After cooking a big holiday feast, there’s no getting around the large number of pots and pans needing a good scrubbing! Instead of washing dishes with the water running, run a sink full of soapy water and wash your pots and pans in it. Not only will this save a lot of water, but will also save soap too!

Plan Ahead

Need to defrost vegetables or other food as part of your meal prep? Consider thawing the night before instead of running water over them the same day.

Use Your Trash Can

A garbage disposal makes clean up neat and clean, but you have to use water to dispose of all those food scraps this way. Instead, scrape them into the trash can (or better yet, start a compost for the raw vegetable items!) to keep the water from running all day while you prepare your turkey and Thanksgiving treats.

Set a Timer

Your relatives may not, but your earth will thank you! Set a mandatory timer for all showers to minimize the amount of time the water is running. (Bonus tip: Turn off the water while brushing your teeth! This saves more water than you may realize.)

Invest in Water Saving Appliances

Now and throughout the year, modern-day technology can help you save water. Water-saving washing machines, dishwashers, showers and toilets may cost a little more, but the savings and benefits to the environment will significantly outweigh the investment.
